Winter Elopement in Iceland

Winters can be bold in Iceland. If we are lucky, as we were, there is no snow and wind is not an issue. But, years are not brothers and usually Iceland greets us with heavy winds and a lot of snow. Iceland can have the most fierce weather conditions that you can ever imagine. That is also the reason why it is also one of the most memorable and vivid experience you could expect. A true wonderland.

During our trip with Amy and Jackie, we went all the way around Iceland. Up north, the sun rises around 11:24 am and sets around 2:47 pm – that gives us barely 4 hours of daylight. Dawn and dusk are long and that also gives plenty of opportunities for photographs. Very often an extra light is needed. Heading up north can be impossible due to the snow. Also, when heavy snowstorms are preset the roads can be closed even close to the capital. If you plan going in winter, you have to be ready for a plan change. We were playful and changed lots of routs and plans on our way. Get ready for some hiking as well!

The ice cave is located in one of Iceland’s biggest glaciers, Vatnajokull. The glacier is so massive that it encompasses several volcanoes and it stretches from the east coast of Iceland all the way to its western coast. We walked around exploring this beautiful place while we waited for the sun to come out and kiss our faces, as we were just waiting for that right moment when everything aligned perfectly in our favor: a tiny sliver of sunlight to grace us with its presence before disappearing entirely behind the clouds. Sunlight was our best friend, but also our greatest enemy because it was getting colder and colder by the minute and we had very little daylight hours available to work with.
