The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Maja and Patrick is how brave they were. Iceland is a magical natural wonder — it can take your breath away around every corner, but it will test you too. We agreed from the start that if the weather turned too rainy and windy, we’d keep the second day as a backup. The wedding day itself was fiercely windy, like nothing I’ve experienced before. Looking back at the photographs, I truly believe Maja and Patrick are one of the bravest couples I’ve ever worked with. We fought the weather together — my lenses were constantly full of black sand and it was hard to even move on the beach. But it was incredibly rewarding to see their faces light up when we ended the first day at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, surrounded by icebergs.
We drove more than 800 kilometres in two days through the southern coast of Iceland. After every turn, another veil was lifted and we thought: this is it, this is the most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen. Raw, clean, pure — you feel so small in it that it must be one of the most magical places on earth to get married. For the most part we were improvising, exploring new locations and revisiting places I’d been before, never in a rush, just enjoying it all despite the weather. Memorable days to carry forever. I’m so grateful I was able to be there with you, Maja and Patrick.
In Maja & Patrick’s words:
We fell in love with Iceland for its romantic, melancholy scenery — and its neutrality. With our families spread across the world, in China, Germany, and the UK, it was impossible to include everybody, so a private wedding followed by receptions back home seemed the fairest way. Plus, this way we got to follow the wedding with the honeymoon right away.
Iceland turned out to be the perfect destination — so much more breathtaking in person. Every turn of the road brought us to new, spectacular views. We were so captivated that we drove 800 kilometres over the two wedding days, always in search of new vistas, and we already can’t wait to go back.
Why elope in Iceland?
Iceland has become one of the most sought-after elopement destinations in the world, and Maja and Patrick’s experience shows exactly why. The landscape is endlessly varied — black sand beaches, moss-covered lava fields, glacier lagoons, waterfalls, and volcanic highlands — all within a single day’s drive along the South Coast. For international couples with family on different continents, Iceland offers a neutral, once-in-a-lifetime setting where the wedding day becomes an adventure in itself. A two-day elopement road trip, like Maja and Patrick’s, is one of the most popular ways to experience it — combining the ceremony, the photography, and the honeymoon into one unforgettable journey.
