Iceland
We made the whole circle in three days
December
Sunrise: 11:24 am
Sunset: 2:47 pm
Winters can be bold in Iceland. If you’re lucky — as we were — there’s no snow and the wind stays calm. But years are not brothers, and usually Iceland greets you with heavy winds and serious snowfall. The weather conditions can be among the fiercest you’ll ever experience. That’s also exactly what makes a winter elopement in Iceland one of the most memorable and vivid adventures you could imagine. A true wonderland.
During our three-day trip with Amy and Jackie, we drove the entire Ring Road around Iceland — over 1,300 kilometres through some of the most dramatic winter landscapes on Earth. Up north in December, the sun rises around 11:24 am and sets around 2:47 pm, giving us barely four hours of daylight to work with. The upside is that dawn and dusk stretch out beautifully in Iceland’s winter, creating long golden hours that are a photographer’s dream. The challenge is real, though — extra lighting is often needed, and heading north can be impossible when the snow is heavy. Roads can close even close to the capital during serious snowstorms. If you’re planning a winter elopement in Iceland, you have to be ready for plans to change. We stayed playful and adjusted our routes constantly along the way. Flexibility is everything.
The ice cave itself is located inside Vatnajökull, one of the largest glaciers in Europe. Vatnajökull is so massive that it covers several active volcanoes beneath it, stretching across a vast area of southeastern Iceland. Each winter, meltwater carves new caves beneath the glacier — no two seasons are ever the same, and no cave lasts forever. We explored this extraordinary place while waiting for the sun to break through the clouds. In December, sunlight becomes precious — every sliver of warmth and light feels like a gift before it disappears again behind the overcast sky. It was getting colder by the minute, and we had very few hours to work with, but that pressure is part of what makes ice cave photography so exhilarating. When everything aligns — the light, the ice, the moment — the results are unlike anything else.
Be ready for some hiking as well. Reaching the ice caves requires a modified super jeep and a walk across the glacier, often through snow and ice. It’s an adventure in every sense of the word — and that’s exactly the point.
